Unconventional production at 65%: what about the inspection of these assets?
Argentina’s energy landscape is entering a new phase. According to a report by the Argentine Institute of Oil and Gas (IAPG), more than 65% of the country’s hydrocarbon production now comes from unconventional sources. This figure represents more than just a number — it signals a structural shift in how energy is produced and, consequently, how operational safety and asset integrity are monitored.

Unconventional production: the operational scenario
Unconventional exploitation, such as that carried out in Vaca Muerta, Neuquén, requires processes that differ significantly from conventional production. The extraction techniques for this type of hydrocarbon are more precise and complex, resulting in operations that are infrastructure- and transport-intensive.
This has doubled the challenges when it comes to inspecting energy assets — not only due to the infrastructure adaptations needed to boost operational and production capacity, but also because of the strict requirements for monitoring to prevent leaks or environmental incidents. Moreover, these regions face additional obstacles related to accessibility and extreme weather conditions.
In this context, relying on traditional inspection models is no longer sufficient.

Smart inspections: technology at the service of operational control
The digitalization of asset monitoring has become a strategic ally for maintaining productivity and ensuring operational safety. Smart inspections — powered by autonomous drones, computer vision, and artificial intelligence — enable highly accurate observations in less time, reducing risks and optimising resources.
Instead of relying on manual fieldwork, it is now possible to plan automated flights, capture thousands of images, detect anomalies at an early stage, and integrate all this data into a single management platform.
