The carbon footprint is everyone's responsibility

20·02·2023·Environment

Today it is vital for every company to take individual responsibility for measuring its carbon footprint as reducing greenhouse gas emissions has many more benefits than just caring for the planet.

The carbon footprint is everyone's responsibility

Companies are seeking to reduce their carbon footprint

Reducing carbon emissions and the impact of different industries has become a key principle in current strategies of brands and organizations. Driving sustainability from the business model is an imperative of our time for multiple reasons: on one hand, there are the data derived from the activity of their own industries, and on the other hand, consumers are increasingly demanding a sustainable commitment from companies.

In 2021, emissions records were surpassed.

There is a growing awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change. In this context, there is also a general concern about the impact that certain companies have on natural resources and the way in which we, as users and consumers, use them. A widespread way of measuring this impact is through the carbon footprint indicator, which both companies and individuals calculate to understand how their actions affect the planet.

Especially among consumers, there is a certain skepticism, as they have increasingly more information about the environmental impacts of the products they consume. This leads them to demand, in a way, that companies adopt more sustainable measures sooner rather than later, both in their processes and in their products and services. This leads to new trends in customers - from any industry - and even to changes in the job market towards those jobs and/or companies that consider and, more importantly, act on their environmental impact. Similarly, in response to this urgent issue of global warming, certain groups of investors redirect and specialize in those companies that generate positive impacts on the environment and society.

It is expected that, in the coming years, concern about environmental impact and the carbon footprint will continue to be a relevant and growing topic. Companies and consumers will have to continue adapting to this new reality and adopting more sustainable practices to mitigate their impact on the planet. It is expected that the increase in awareness and demand for sustainable products and services will lead to greater investment in more efficient and less polluting production technologies and processes in different industries.

Carbon footprint measurement

At Uali, we began measuring our carbon footprint in 2023. We are working with Dendro, a climate tech company that enables the integration and analysis of relevant information for carbon footprint calculations, improving the process and delivering indicators for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, following international standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. We understand the carbon footprint as a simple diagnostic tool that is widely spread and useful for communicating certain impacts that companies have. Using this indicator, we can communicate the actions generated to mitigate emissions and the impact they generate.

How did the diagnosis help us?

Having the diagnosis of the carbon footprint allows us to obtain a measurement of the environmental impact that the company's or individual's activities have on the planet. This can help identify specific areas where improvements can be made to reduce the carbon footprint, such as reducing energy consumption, improving the efficiency of production and transportation processes, and using more sustainable materials. By implementing measures to reduce the carbon footprint, we can improve indicators and contribute to the preservation of the environment and the efficient and conscious use of our resources.

At Uali, we designed a tentative baseline for 2022 to contrast certain items against 2023 when measuring the carbon footprint. This fact contributes to the sustainability strategy we have as a company. We schedule the results for monthly analysis, being able to follow the indicator's evolution on a semesterly basis. It is an action fully driven from our core, understanding that it is part of the company's vision: to drive a cleaner and more sustainable world.

What benefits did it bring us?

We offer our clients information to improve and streamline decision-making, so measuring the carbon footprint as a company is a commitment that aligns with what we offer. Strategically, the carbon footprint allows us, in the first place, to raise awareness about the impact and, from there, propose actions that allow us to reduce it.

At the same time, we believe that it can help us diversify our investor portfolio, attract talent, and access more demanding markets. Measuring our impact also allows us to align and contribute to our clients' processes.

Talking about concrete cases: What actions did we implement?

The concern about climate change and the impact of human activity on the environment has been increasing, leading to greater attention to companies' carbon footprint, as it is the most widely used environmental indicator. As a general trend, consumers, investors, and employees are showing greater awareness and demand for action on companies' carbon footprint.

The trend towards reducing our impact, as a company and as individuals, is gaining momentum worldwide and across sectors. Companies that adopt sustainable practices are seeing benefits both in terms of reputation and brand as well as profitability. Therefore, the demand for sustainable companies committed to positive environmental impact and reducing their carbon footprint is likely to continue to grow in the future.

Reducing emissions of polluting gases in the energy sector requires urgent action on a global scale. While a global energy transition is underway, more action is needed to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. Our company comes with concrete proposals for this sector, which does not pause its transformation towards a decarbonization and innovation sector.

Awards and recognitions

We have been awarded in the G20 as the most innovative in the Green and Renewable Energy sector within the Digital Innovation Network and we presented our technology at the EGT of Poland Energy Environmental Technology Green Transformation, which brings together more than 174 companies from Europe and Latin America, with Uali being the only Spanish one. In November 2022, we were also a finalist in the South Summit Bilbao in the energy transition category, as well as in the Brazil summit of the same year.

We join the energy evolution by combining robotics, IoT, and AI with the aim of providing valuable and actionable information that optimizes decision-making processes in asset management. Saving time, costs, and having positive impact on the environment. Get to know us!
